Hinna + Iain {ENGAGED!}

I had the pleasure of meeting Hinna over the summer. This lovely bride and her fiance, Iain, are getting married at the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda next month. It'll be the first wedding of 2012 for MDCE!! I'm super excited about this wedding because it'll be my first Indian wedding! I also team up again with the fabulous Dodie Sy from Brassavalos Floral Couture! It's going to be a super fab wedding!!

Laura + Manny {ENGAGED!}

Laura and Manny are one of the most beautiful couples I've ever seen...and I really mean that!! Laura works for US Bank and Manny is a professional baseball player entering his 7th year in pro baseball. His career includes the San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies. Laura and Manny will be tying the knot this month at the beautiful St. Denis Catholic Church in Diamond Bar followed by a platinum wedding reception at the Hilton in Pasadena. MDCE will be reunited once again with Amber Event Production and Brassavolas Floral Couture for their lavish wedding (aka the Platinum Dream Team). I'm definitely looking forward to their nuptials!!

Nadia + Jeff {ENGAGED!}

When Nadia contacted me to coordinate her wedding I was thrilled, of course! I was even more surprised to find out what her future last name will be! You see I've known her fiance, Jeff, since the 2nd grade! We went to the same elementary, junior high, and high school. Small world, huh?! I guess you can say I was born to coordinate Jeff's wedding! LOL! I haven't seen Jeff since high school so our first consultation meeting served as our little reunion. I'm very excited to share Part One (yes I said Part One!) of their e-session with you guys! Part Two, which will be photographed in California, will be posted soon. For this e-session, Nadia and Jeff decided to do a destination e-session! They traveled to Bali, Indonesia, which is where Nadia is from! This session was photographed by Paulus Susanto from one of my favorite international wedding photography firms, Axioo.

From Nadia's own words: "When we were brainstorming the concept, we came up with "Eat, Play, Love". The idea came from the book & movie "Eat, Pray, Love", in which part of the movie was filmed in Bali. It actually made total sense since both Jeff & I love trying new places to eat (especially desserts), playing games on the iPhone and iPad, video games, and board games. Some of the locations we went to for this session were Divine Wonderland, The Junction Restaurant, and Tegal Wangi Beach."

Katerina + Paul {Engaged!} - Part One Teaser

Katerina and I used to work together years ago. We've known each other for more than five years. So when she asked me to plan her wedding I was completely thrilled, but most of all I felt extremely honored!

This cute couple simply LOVES New York!! I don't blame them. It's my kind of city!! In the winter of 2009, Kat and Paul traveled to New York City to celebrate her birthday. Little did she know she was going to get the biggest surprise of her life! On a snowy day in the middle of Central Park, Paul proposed to the love of his life with a beautiful emerald-cut sparkler! So it's no wonder this couple decided to travel back to NYC with their photographer, the fabulous Kristi Klemens of KLK Photography, for their e-session! Their love for NYC doesn't stop there. Their NYC winter engagement will serve as our inspiration in designing their November 11th (11-11-11) platinum wedding, which will take place at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel and Spa in Westlake Village, California. Kristi + Andy {Engaged}!

Kristi and Andy are my second 'internet love story' couple! They've been together for 3.5 years and still going strong! When Kristi approached me to coordinate her wedding I was surprised to hear she had been planning her wedding from the Bay Area. I asked her why Andy and her chose to wed in Southern California. Her answer? "A vintage-themed wedding at the Queen Mary". Yes, the historic Queen Mary! I've never stepped foot on this boat before. Not only am I excited to see Kristi and Andy get married, but I'm thrilled that this will be my first time coordinating on a historic boat! Their wedding will definitely be timeless and elegant! Marisol + T.J. {Engaged}!

This love story is 7 years in the making. Marisol and T.J. are my very first destination wedding couple. This sweet couple met in 2004 at a mutual friend's party. They had a long distance relationship for several years. She lived in Carson and TJ lived in Oxnard, which is also my hometown. (Small world right?) TJ proposed to Marisol on a hot air balloon ride in Temecula on February 13, 2010. During the ride the pilot made a suggestion to Marisol to take pictures of the vineyard. To her surprise, there was a sign that read "Marisol, will you marry me?" Very romantic and sweet! Marisol and TJ will have a beautiful beach wedding at Marina Maroma Paradise Beach Club in the beautiful Riviera Maya in January 2012.

This pretty e-session took place at three locations: Old Town San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Beach, and Irvine. It was photographed by one of my favorite wedding photographers, Mieng Saetia. Enjoy!

Ava's {Lilac & Warm Gray} Vintage Baptism Reception

It was our youngest daughter, Ava's turn to get baptized. I didn't want to buy another dress because I wanted Ava to wear the same dress my eldest daughter wore when she was baptized 4 years ago. However, I wanted to change up the look a bit to make it Ava's own graceful style by making the dress sleeveless. The overall event concept was centered on the white silk dupioni dress and vintage-style headband I bought from Etsy. The headband is made of raw silk with Swarovski Crystals accented all over and topped with a French netting overlay. This vintage style served as the perfect inspiration.

Ava's baptism reception was all about pure elegance...chic with a touch of modern & vintage sophistication. I chose a soft & beautiful color palette of lilac, slate gray, white and a touch of pink. The modern-vintage ambiance resonated throughout the day from the outfit to the chic & delish mini desserts table.

We hosted the reception at one of our favorite Thai restaurants in the area. Instead of giving out party favors, we made a donation in honor of our guests to the American Red Cross to support the reliefs efforts in Japan.

All the floral centerpieces sat in assorted vintage milk glass compotes. The floral design was different for each centerpiece, which added texture in a non-cookie cutter way.

I wanted alternating centerpieces so I bought white wooden candleholders of various heights from IKEA. They were topped off with glass votives wrapped with vellum, which I stamped with a medium-sized peony stamp with pink ink.

Each table signage had different pictures of Ava from her newborn photo shoot, which were also shot by Stephy G.

No party is complete without a dessert buffet table. We ordered various mini desserts and rented vintage pink and white cake platters and ruffled bowls from Sweet and Saucy. My husband built a backdrop for the dessert table. He wrapped the frame with gray fabric we bought at Joann's. I made a paper lace doily banner glued to lilac satin ribbon. The banner was pinned onto the backdrop to complete the vintage look. (Photo by Me)

Pauline + Wayne {Engaged}!

Yes I know it’s been months since my last post! As you all know I gave birth to my second princess, Ava Loren! I wanted to take it easy before I got back into the mode of planning fabulous wedding and events again. So far 2011 has proven to be quite busy for MDC Events! Not only do I have some yummylicious weddings coming up for this year and next year, but I have other parties coming up as well! I’d like to start off by introducing Pauline and Wayne! I remember the first time I met with this adorable couple! We met at Victoria Gardens to discuss their upcoming nuptials on Saturday, February 28, 2009. I remember telling them, “Wow. June 2011 wedding? That’s a long time from now.” Well, time sure flies! They will be tying the knot in 1.5 months! Pauline and Wayne met through her cousin at an internet café Wayne’s family used to own. This couple has been dating since June 17, 2002. They will finally tie the knot in a hot pink & black modern-vintage themed wedding at the Lindley-Scott House in Azusa on the same day he asked her to be his girl (aww…how sweet)! I’m definitely looking forward to their wedding! For now please enjoy their urban e-session taken by Peter Chaney from iNickel Photography. Anika & Ava’s Wonderland – A Big Sister Shower and Baby Shower

IT ALL STARTED WITH AN IDEA…

It all started with an idea one of my husband’s students had. Angela and I had a conversation about Anika becoming a big sister to our second girl, who we plan to name Ava and who I will give birth to any day now. Angela suggested we should throw a Big Sister Shower to prep her for her role and so she won’t feel left out in the all the attention Ava is getting. My husband and I loved the idea so I immediately started to brainstorm cute party themes. My daughter is very fond of playing with her tea set at home so I decided on a “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party Theme”. Since I didn’t want the Disney version, I decided it would be a great opportunity for me to design something I have never done before…VINTAGE. I figured the Lewis Carroll version of Alice in Wonderland (or what I like to call it…the old-school version) was the perfect Wonderland I wanted to create for Anika and Ava. It was the perfect “vintage” theme! I incorporated the whimsical, colorful, and vintage feel that Lewis Carroll’s version had. From the invitations to the milk glass containers everything shouted “vintage-chic”. We chose a perfect venue to hold a party. A beautiful park with a pretty lake and where ducks roamed around freely in Chino Hills rightfully called “English Springs Park”. It can’t get any perfect than that! Special thanks to my husband, Jessica, Florence, and my sister. The party wouldn’t be a success without your help! The most important thing is that our daughter enjoyed herself! After all…we created this for our daughters! Enjoy the pictures!

I searched long and hard for the perfect designer for the invitations (please see “TIP” below). I finally found the designer through my favorite website, Etsy. Lindsey Ryan Designs had the perfect whimsical and vintage style I was looking for.

TIP: Whether you’re planning a wedding or shower everything starts with the invitation. It lets your guests know what to expect and it gives them a sense of what type of party it is. Make sure that consistency with theme, colors, fonts, and style is carried out throughout the entire event including the details.

The delicious dessert bar! My husband sewn pink table clothes and white lace runners and made pink/white stripe curtains to frame the gazebo and the view overlooking the lake.

The curtains were made of crepe streamers. It took countless hours to sew each layer and give a ruffled texture, but the end result was fabulous! I got the inspiration from here. The circle banner was a DIY project. The printable template was from here.

I was in search of shabby chic-looking chandeliers at a reasonable price. I found them on Amazon! Anika was more than pleased!!!

Cheesecake Pops were homemade (and a HUGE HIT!) by intern, Jessica, and I.

Since I never done a vintage-glam party before I knew it was important that every element couldn’t be overlooked. After all it’s ALL IN THE DETAILS!!! I scored vintage cake platters from Home Goods. I also scored some vintage frames and milk glass vases and compotes from an Event Designers Swapmeet.

Mini red velvet cupcakes and vanilla cupcakes called Cloud 9 from Dolcissimo Cupcakes in Chino Hills. The "Eat Me" cupcake flags was another DIY project my daughter, Anika, and I did together. Each flag was topped with a blue crystal.

Cream puffs (to the left) and my ultimate FAVORITE dessert...French Almond Macarons! We brought Anika with us to Layer Cake Bakery in Irvine for a tasting to see which ones she liked best. She chose caramel, lemon, and strawberry macarons. They were a HUGE HIT as well!!!

I made these DIY pretty favor tags. Cute huh?

I also made the "Drink Me" straw flags and attached them to each vintage soda pop blue/white striped straws.

Ethereal Arabic Platinum Wedding Feature: {Myriam + Ashraf}

When I walked into Myriam’s bridal suite to check up on her I noticed a radiant glow upon her (keep in mind this was before the makeup artist arrived). To be quite honest, I’ve never seen a bride this radiant in my life. I knew her wedding day was going to be filled with love and beauty. I remember taking a look at her right before she walked down the aisle and thinking how unbelievably striking she was. The ceremony took place at dusk in the grand ballroom of the historic Casa del Mar in Santa Monica. We had one hour to transform the ballroom into a breathtaking and heavenly reception filled with crystal chandeliers and blush pink orchids with crystals hanging on manzanita branches made to look as if they were floating in air. A delicious four-course meal consisting of crab cakes, lobster, filet mignon, and two wedding cakes were served. Guests were entertained by an amazing performance by belly dancers, a live Arabic band, and a fantastic DJ. Butler-passed snacks of mini cheeseburgers, mini pizzas, French fries served in cones, and chocolate & vanilla milkshake shooters were served at midnight to satisfy the guests’ late night cravings. One word describes this extraordinary platinum wedding, which is one of the best weddings I’ve ever coordinated and designed to date, ETHEREAL. Pia + Ryan // Sneakers & Shoes

The key to every couple is their story. The story always defines who and what we are and even more importantly, what we are all about. Every time we meet with a couple, we look for the things that make them unique, interesting, and separate them from others.

Sure, everyone is going to share some vows or the exchange of a kiss at the end of a ceremony, but we want to know what it is it that makes a couple unique. What separates them from all others and helps to tell their story? In Pia + Ryan's case, it's simply sneakers & shoes.

You see, when we first met this wonderful couple, the first thing that stood out were the sneakers Ryan was wearing, and after a simple comment about the kicks, Ryan revealed that (at the time) he owned over 300 pairs of sneakers. . . . . not a typo. . . . . over 300 pairs. Then Pia revealed that her love for shoes was not to be sold short as she also owned shoes into the triple digit count. Let's just say that they have some serious shoe equity :-)

Well, from that point on, it was a given that the guys (and girls) would be rockin' some special footwear the day of and we were determined to tie it into their story. So you will see a fun little sequence in this trailer that takes place before the grand entrance as the guys needed to go to their car to grab their custom kicks. We searched everywhere and couldn't find one of the groomsmen, and then, at the last minute, he finally showed up. He was hanging out at the bar, who would have thought? So we inserted him last minute as you'll see. Also, a shout out to the INSANE photo backdrop (not a photo-booth, this thing took up an entire room!) and the ever talented Gregorio Bumatay of Bumatay Studio for snapping stunning imagery the day of. Thanks also to to Majell Del Castillo of MDC Events for keeping the timeline on track!

Pia and Ryan, you're style rocks and even better, the fact that you were willing to be yourselves on the day of your wedding makes us smile every time we see this trailer. Enjoy!

DIY Photo Booths: The Hottest Trend

Today's post I want to talk a little more about DIY photo booths. Photo booth rentals have been in demand for quite a few years. However, recent economic trends have shifted forcing couples to create their own photo booths either by putting up a fabric background (like the ones at high school dances) or by simply holding vintage frames. For Pia & Ryan's wedding we created a modern photo booth to fit the bride and groom's style (thanks to the help of my husband and his friend). The bride purchased fun props, which the guests had lots of fun with. Her photographer added another shooter to take pictures of all the fun. It was a HUGE HIT! Whether you rent a photo booth or build your own, it's always good to have a little something for your guests to enjoy and become interactive instead of sitting down for 3-4 hours straight.

For the budget brides, this particular photo booth backdrop can be rented out with customization, set-up, delivery, and teardown included in the rental fee within Southern California. Extra travel fees will apply for events outside of Southern California. Props, furniture, signages, camera, printer, photo paper are NOT included. Please inquire either by calling or emailing me.

Dreamy Details of Sophistication and Elegance for a Modern-Chic Wedding {Part II of Pia + Ryan's Platinum Wedding}

My ultimate gift to a good friend of mine was designing and coordinating her DREAM WEDDING! Get ready because this post is filled with tons of detailed shots from Pia + Ryan's platinum wedding. As promised here is PART II of the modern-chic wedding filled with gorgeous details! I can't believe it's been a month since Pia + Ryan got married. It's always great to hear the overwhelming positive feedback from guests (especially the newlyweds) on how fabulous everything turned out and how seamless the event was. And it's always a delight to hear how much the newlyweds and their guests simply can't get enough of the wedding and how anxious they are to see pictures.

As with all my weddings, when I hear or see the guests mouths (literally) drop to the floor and their eyes widen like a kid in a candy store, I immediately know I've done my job right. As an event designer not only do I want to run a seamless show, but you want to imprint images in the guests minds to hold in their memories forever. Enjoy!!!

{Below Right: Customized coin (arrhae) and ring pillow - It always helps to know someone in any industry. In this case, one of the bridesmaids works in the fashion industry. As a gift to the bride, she created two pillows, one for the arrhae and another for the rings. The stunning pillows were made of gorgeous satin fabric in eggplant purple and with a beaded/sequined swirly applique. The ends of the pillows had hanging purple crystals. Hello there! Part I of this Wedding Feature Series is all about the fabulous platinum wedding I designed and coordinated for my dear friends and compadres, Pia and Ryan. It was two years in the making. We made sure that no detail was overlooked. People often ask me what ingredients make up a platinum wedding? What inspires me as a designer to create such a wedding? To me the key inspiration comes from my clients' personalities. However, my inspiration also comes from my library of magazines, interior design books, color and fabric swatches, nature, wedding trends, architecture, entertainment industry, and the list goes on. This particular wedding was inspired by the jewel-tone colors that make up the most glamorous animal in the planet, the lovely peacock AND the Gucci Spring/Summer Sale 2009. In my idea bin I threw in purple + teal + gold colors of the peacock and Gucci Ad, the couple's sense of modern and chic style, Pia's love for designer fashion and shoes, Ryan's love for Jordan kicks, a Tuscan-inspired reception venue surrounded by beautiful mansions, a dash of uptown glam from "Sex in the City", and VOILA!

Fortunately for my readers and fans the photographer for this wedding, the fabulously talented Greg Bumatay of Bumatay Studios, was kind enough to forward a couple of TEASERS to suppress your appetites for now. Part 1 of this Wedding Feature Series will definitely leave you craving for more! This ultra modern-chic wedding has jaw-dropping, breathtaking, and awe-inspiring details! About the tablescapes and ballroom: Tall centerpieces comprised of a cluster of purple hydrangeas and cascading white phalaenopsis orchids. Curly willow dressed up the inside of the tall cylinder vases. Surrounding the tall centerpieces were modern stemware votive holders in various heights with floating candles. Tables with short centerpieces had a modern arrangement with clusters of white phalaenopsis orchids, white ranunculus, purple lisianthus, Picasso calla lilly, and burgundy ti leaf lining the short cylinder glass vases. Situated on top of white silk taffeta dinner napkins and gold chargers for each guest were a custom-made round transparent vinyl menu cards in opaque purple with the ornate art that matched their letterpress wedding invitation and decorated with a single crystal. Completing the look of the ballroom was a custom seamless white dance floor with their monogram in a gold vinyl transfer finish. Everything about this wedding was amazing. The guests, especially Pia and Ryan, couldn't believe their eyes! It was like they were in a different ballroom!

About the Escort Card tablescape: Keeping with the modern-chic ambiance the escort card table comprised of custom calligraphy escort cards by Calligraphy Katrina. As you know from previous posts, I've been planning Pia's {Purple + Teal} wedding since September 2008 the moment she got engaged. Although I do not have any pro pictures or videos to share at this moment, I have this Time Lapse video that my husband recorded for me to show my fans and readers what it takes to set-up a platinum wedding such as this one. Myriam + Ashraf {E-Session}

I first met Myriam and Ash last year through my good friend and new bride, Katerina. I remember my first phone conversation with Myriam. We clicked instantly. And when she told me where they booked their venue I knew I just had to be their planner! At my first meeting with Myriam and Ash, I was amazed. You can feel the love they had for each other radiating through their eyes. They are such a warm, loving and funny couple I knew right away that we were going to have such a blast planning their nuptials. When I asked how they met I was in for an even bigger shock! Only 3 months after meeting online, Ash proposed to Myriam on New Year's Eve 2008 in Santa Barbara. Did your mouth drop? Did your eyes just get bigger? I know! That's the same reaction I got! They are my first whirlwind couple. And my mouth dropped even more when I caught a glimpse of her HUGE engagement ring! OMG! It's so big and gorgeous it knocked me out. (Ash, you really did a fabulous job picking that ring out.) Honestly, this couple deserves nothing but THE BEST for their wedding. And I made sure they got it!

Their e-session was photographed by Tauran Woo. It was taken at Santa Monica pier because that was where they met face-to-face for the very first time. Myriam and Ash will wed at the luxurious five-star Hotel Casa del Mar in Santa Monica in 1.5 weeks. This wedding is something I've been looking forward to since the day I spoke to Myriam over the phone. They are such an amazing couple and I feel honored I got to share the ride with them. Their wedding will have platinum written all over it. So many yummy details...I wish I can tell you all how we plan to WOW their guests! You must stay tuned!!! Remember my friend/bride, Pia?

Well if you’ve been following my blog from Day One you probably remember when this bride first got engaged two years ago (click here for the post). You might also remember one of my past posts hinting to her {vintage-modern-romantic} wedding concept and {jewel-tone purple & teal} color scheme for their wedding (click here for the post).

I met Pia about 6 years ago. We have the same expensive taste, we share the same sense of style, and we both LOVE weddings. She is also my daughter’s Godmother. Now, my bride/friend/Godmother to my daughter is finally tying the knot after a 10-year long distance relationship with her fiancé, Ryan. They did a lot of traveling between San Jose and LA so you can imagine the amount of frequent flier miles they accumulated over the years! How they did it I have know clue. But I can tell you this couple's love for each other is very strong!

This e-session, which was photographed by Greg Bumatay, was photographed at an airport hanger with a Lear jet (thanks Phil for letting us borrow your plane) and the beautiful Viceroy Santa Monica. Talk about luxury at its finest! I simply can’t wait until their wedding day. They’re set to wed on May 29, 2010 at the Tuscan-inspired Vellano Country Club, a private country club located in Chino Hills. Million dollar luxury mansions featuring a Greg Norman signature golf course surround this brand new venue. Their wedding is two-years in the making. It will have lots of goodies and details galore that will make your heart swoon! This wedding will have lots of couture fashion that will make the gals from ‘Sex in the City’ feel proud. Majell + Steve | Lifestyle Part 1 - "Married & Loving It" Session

In the beginning of this year I wrote a post about the reaffirmation of me and my husband's love for each other {please see older post}. I spoke about our decision to retake our "e-pictures", which of course we now call our "anniversary pictures", "lifestyle session", or "Married & Loving It Session". My husband and I have been meticulously planning our a-session for several months. We carefully chose our outfits. We made sure it coordinated well with the locations we chose and our personal style. As a wedding planner, I see a TON of photographers work through blogs, magazines, etc. We wanted to choose THE best photographer who can capture the moment, not just take pictures. We chose Mieng Saetia for his artistic vision, modern and sexy style. His ability to capture the moment created breathtaking pictures. They looked like it came straight out of a magazine. Très chic...so LA. It was hard to narrow down our pictures to a few so I decided to make this a two-part series.

Part 1 of this series took place in Viceroy Santa Monica, a beautiful modern boutique hotel. The hotel represents our style as a couple. Our outfits: Banana Republic, Express, and my peep-toe green Christian Louboutin stilettos {I chose green shoes because they give a nice pop of color and they matched with the green decor accents of the hotel}. Not Your Ordinary Father-Daughter & Mother-Son Dance

As you know, I'm the type of person who loves to think outside-of-the-box. It's always refreshing to turn the traditional into something unique. I also love it when wedding couples and their vendors get creative to make their wedding as unique as possible. Today we have a treat! A DJ friend of mine from my high school days, Rommel Andaya aka DJ ROM, performed at a wedding in San Diego recently. I wanted him to share his thoughts and this amazing video he captured of an untraditional Father-Daughter and Mother-Son dance! THE BEST idea I've seen. Thanks to DJ ROM and his videography crew from Starcross'd Creative for sharing this video.

DJ ROM: "It was a given that I was going to be the DJ of choice for Mr. & Mrs. Kelvin Valenzuela because they have seen me perform at their best friend's wedding and seen me DJ at other events as well. The Wedding couple made it clear to me that they wanted to make their wedding reception really fun. They had a San Diego Chargers themed entrance and decided to allow dancing during the intermissions so that the wedding guests don't get bored. Their program was full of several dance performances. As we were selecting songs for the different events during their reception, they proposed an idea that they wanted to do a surprise dance performance during the Father/Daughter and Mother/Son dance. The idea was for them to dance to a slow song and then the DJ stops the song to play a dance song. The wedding couple would pretend that the DJ made a mistake, but then when they hear the dance music they would begin to do the dance motions to three dance songs. The proposed idea was a dance battle between the wedding couple. However, I suggested for other people to join in unexpectedly to add to the shock factor. So they decided to teach their parents the dance moves. I knew that this was a performance that I wanted to capture on video so I recorded it. I am so glad that I did because it was so amazing!"

Married & Loving It: A Reaffirmation of Love

For the past couple of years I have been pestering my husband, Steve, to renew our vows. I remember a few months after our destination wedding in 2004 I looked at the calendar to see when the next time our wedding date, June 26th, would land on a Saturday. I remember telling Steve, "Ok. Our wedding date will be on a Saturday in the year 2010. That'll give us enough time to save and plan our stateside wedding to renew our vows." Some people might wonder, "Why renew your vows after six years of marriage? Why not wait until your 10, 30, or 50 year wedding anniversary." Well, there is no set rule saying you HAVE to renew your vows within a certain number of years. Couples renew their vows anytime and as many times as they please. Heck, even Fergie and Josh Duhamel renewed their vows a year after they got married! Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale renewed their vows a couple months after their wedding in London. (See an old post regarding renewing vows)

Some time in 2009, with 4.5 years of experience in planning events and weddings, I asked Steve again if he wanted to renew our vows in 2010. He said, "If I have never broken it, why should I renew it?" Of course, I was happy with that answer, but at the same time I was disappointed. Everyone who knows me knows I LOVE weddings. If I had to marry Steve again, I'd do it! Being a good husband he is he wanted to do something else in lieu of renewing our vows. He told me, "I'd rather upgrade the rock on your engagement ring than pay for another wedding." So in September 2009, we went shopping for the perfect upgrade to my original 1.10-carat princess cut solitaire. It didn't take long for me to find the perfect upgrade. I found the perfect upgrade while searching through the website of celeb-favorite jewelry designer, Tacori. In October 2009, we decided to visit the nearest Robbins Bros store since they carried the Tacori collection. I showed Steve what I wanted. However, he wanted to wait to purchase it. I was hoping he'd buy it for my birthday. Well, my birthday came and went. No ring. Then Christmas came and went. Still no ring. On December 28th, Steve and I visited the store again. That night he ordered my Tacori ring! I was so excited. I was beaming...and I'm still beaming every time I think about it! The ring is currently being custom-made and won't arrive until February 14th. I can't wait to show you all!

Another thing we're looking forward to, in lieu of renewing our vows, is our "Married & Loving It" photo session (aka Anniversary session) in February. Very few married couples do A-sessions, but I wouldn't be surprised if this might become a trend soon. A-sessions are very similar to what E-sessions (aka Engagement sessions) are to brides and grooms. For those of you who are wondering why we chose to take an A-session in February rather than our real anniversary in June? It's simply because it is a lot cooler in February.

A different approach to the reaffirmation of our love. It's not the typical ceremony and reception, but it will certainly do. And we're certainly loving it! Stay tuned...

Dance Floors 101: "Seamless" Dance Floors

You've seen it in bridal magazines. You've seen it in on the show "Platinum Weddings". Heck you've probably seen it featured in one of the weddings I've coordinated. It's one of the sought after design elements that ties all the elements of the reception decor together...the "seamless" dance floor. These dance floors come in various colors (black, gold, and white-very popular) and shapes (square, round, and oval). You might wonder why I put quotation marks around 'seamless'. It's very important that you know the difference between seamless and non-seamless dance floors. Hopefully, this will help you understand.

A lot of brides say they want a seamless dance floor thinking these floors will not have horizontal and vertical lines running throughout. They think that it's a whole piece. Well, I hate to be the one to tell you, but it's not a one-piece wonder. In fact, it's impossible to bring in an 18'x18' dance floor through the reception doors without breaking it apart. Think about it. So why does the event industry call it "seamless" dance floors? Technically they are not "seamless" because they need to be in pieces for easier delivery. The term "seamless" is in reference to the seams surrounding each 3'x4' or 4'x4' square.

Some dance floors have metal seams surrounding each square. Some dance floors don't show metal seams. The dance floors with metal seams are NOT "seamless" because you can see the black/gray metal lines throughout the dance floor (see Example A). The dance floors without the metal seams showing are considered "seamless" because they appear just that (see Example B). TIP: Before signing a contract with an event rental company for a "seamless" dance floor (especially a WHITE "seamless" dance floor), ask the sales rep if you can take a look at a sample. It's always a good thing to see what you're paying for before dropping $800-$2500 on a dance floor.

Crystal candelabras, pinks, golds, white seamless dance floor, lush flowers...that's how Laura envisioned her wedding to be. Raul envisioned a rather simpler wedding with very little pink. It was the battle of the sexes, however, I was able to come up with a little bit of both to please my clients. The end result: a fabulous fusion of glamour, romance, and sophistication that the bride and groom loved...not to mention the guests and a few gawkers, too. I love it when I give them the "WOW" factor. Almost everything was adorned with crystals to incorporated the bling factor like the menu cards, bride & groom chair signs, gold overlays, centerpieces, the bride's attire and bouquet, and the wedding cake!

Their wedding was photographed by the wonderfully talented Rudy Arpia, who was assisted by Miguel Mayo. Thanks to my assistant Pia Pagkatotohan for assisting me throughout the planning process and fine tuning the details. Thanks to my day-of assistants, Portia Gale and Cynthia Yi. You gals are fabulous!

The day started out bright and early at the Millenium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles where Laura and her party got dolled up.

Laura and Raul tied the knot at the gorgeous Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. After the ceremony they stopped by the Disney Concert Hall to take a few pictures.

SoCal Brides: Effective Today LA County Sales Tax Increases

I read an article today on LATimes.com regarding the Measure R sales tax voter-approved increase to build transportation projects in LA. How will this affect those of you getting married? Well, if your reception will be held in LA County the sales tax hike will slightly increase your overall total for food and beverage. Keep in mind just because you signed the caterer’s contract 1-2 years ago when sales tax was at 8.25% it doesn’t mean that you are locked-in to that particular rate. They are obligated to increase it.

Here are the new sales tax rates:

Los Angeles County

Pico Rivera & South Gate – 10.75%
Avalon, El Monte, and Inglewood - 10.25%
All other areas – 9.75%

2.0 - Planning Your Dream Wedding During Tough Economic Times

Last week I listed five tips to lower your wedding costs. Here are the remaining five:

6) Decor. Choose flowers that are in-season. If there is a certain bloom you want, but can't afford try choosing an inexpensive one that looks similar. Remember that centerpieces, especially tall ones, will take up most of your floral budget. Opt for short centerpieces only. If you really want tall centerpieces, alternate between tall and short. The major advantage to alternating centerpieces is to give the room dimension without the "cookie-cutter" look.

You can also opt to do-it-yourself. There are a few website that sell flowers in bulk, like FiftyFlowers.com. Delegate the task of creating all floral arrangements to someone you know and trust. Do not attempt to do it all yourself. Can't afford nice looking floral centerpieces? You can never go wrong with candles...lots of candles in various heights. It gives a nice glow to your guests' faces and it is a great alternative to lighting if you can't afford to hire a lighting designer.

7) Alcohol. Alcohol can definitely increase your food and beverage budget. One way to keep your beverage bill low is to serve signature cocktails. Choose a cocktail that complements your colors or the both of you and give it a catchy name. The key to this is using house brand liquor as the main ingredient instead of premium liquor. Other options include serving beer and wine only, champagne only for toast, or you can serve alcohol during cocktail hour only.

8) Bridal fashion: The dress. Finding your dream dress is not limited to bridal salons anymore. You can find affordable gowns in stores like J. Crew and Ann Taylor. Discount bridal salons like David's Bridal carry nice gowns at affordable prices. Are you absolutely set on purchasing a couture gown, but can't see yourself spending between $4,000-$10,000 on a dress you'll only wear for one day? Try your luck at designer sample sales. Designers like Vera Wang and Monique Lhuillier offers sample sales at least once or twice a year on their gowns. You can expect to save between 50%-75% off of your purchase. Another way to save money is to rent a gown or borrow your mother's old wedding gown, that is if it's in good condition.

9) Cake. The cost of wedding cakes vary depending on the ingredients used and the overall design, which can range between $4.00-$10.00 per slice. One way to save money is to simplify the design of your cake. Choose buttercream over expensive fondant. Have your florist decorate your cake with fresh flowers instead of using sugar flowers. Another way to save money is to order a flat sheet of your cake and have it served to your guests. A trend that has been going on for a few years is substituting the traditional tiered cake for tiered cupcakes. If you decide to follow that trend, make sure you have a baker make an 6"-8" round wedding cake for you guys to cut during the reception.

10) Hair, makeup, music, photography, and videography. Hiring a good photographer can be quite expensive. One way to cut costs on photography is to select a package that includes the hi-resolution images on a disc instead of an album. You can opt to create your own coffee table wedding album through budget-friendly websites like MyPublisher.com and MyCanvas.com. If you know someone who's starting out in the photography or videography business, you might want to acquire their services since they will either do it for free to build their portfolio or charge you way less compared to established businesses. Student photographers/videographers or relatives who can capture the important moments can be another money-saving option.

As for music, hiring a DJ is more affordable than hiring a live band. Another possibility is to have an iPod wedding. Load your favorite music onto your iPod and assign someone to man the device.

You can cut costs on hair and makeup by doing it yourself. If that's not an option consider hiring a student from a beauty school for your wedding day. Another option is to get your hair done by your regular hair stylist and have your makeup done at a department store like Nordstrom or Macy's. If you decide to get your makeup done at a department store make sure you carry your makeup along for touch ups.

Trend Alert: Wedding Trends for 2010 - Back to Basics

Look for more traditional and simple weddings in 2010. Weddings of grandeur are out. Do-it-yourself weddings with attention to detail are in. This is obviously due to the economy. An article from GetMarried.com listed the top 10 trends for 2010. Here's a summary of what to expect:

More focus on attention to detail.
Smaller guest-list and more intimate weddings taking place at home. Casual and elegant events in the backyard.
Big market for buttercream versus fondant. Fondant is actually more expensive.
Personable favors to make your guests feel much appreciated will be making a comeback.
Local destination weddings are in.
Monochromatic and vibrant colors are in.
Eco-friendly green weddings are a growing trend.
A different approach to the typical photo montages will take place. Look for a growing trend of integrating video into weddings.
Videographers are upgrading their filming quality to HD and Blu-Ray. However, it may cost a little more.
Photographers or videographers may soon shoot via professional cameras that takes photos and films in HD quality all in one.

1.0 - Planning Your Dream Wedding During Tough Economic Times

The state of the economy is affecting EVERYONE across the board! But that doesn't stop couples from getting married! It's no secret that the latest trend for today's couples is being frugal. As a result, couples are scaling back on hosting lavish events for more simpler ones emphasizing greatly on the details to help create an amazing event. Although my clients have different wedding budgets ranging from average to high-end budgets, they share the same desire...a fabulous wedding that won't burn a hole in their wallets. A lot of people ask me how this can be possible if their budget is tight. This two-part series will discuss how it is possible to do so.

1) Create a budget that's affordable...VERY realistic. I can't stress this enough. A lot of couples make the mistake of not creating a wedding budget first. By not creating a budget, you're spending can get out-of-control. It can be very easy to get carried away with the details. You see things you absolutely have to have in your wedding through television shows like "Platinum Weddings" and high-end bridal magazines like "Grace Ormonde: Wedding Style", but you need to ask yourself "can I see myself spending $2,500 on a custom gold-colored round dance floor?" Know where you need to allocate your money, which brings me to the next step...

Tip: Make sure you account for sales tax, service charges, set-up/delivery fees, and feeding your vendors at the reception into your wedding budget. For more info on "feeding your vendors" please read step #3)

2) Prioritize what you and your fiancé(e) are willing to splurge on. Discuss with your fiancé(e) where you are willing to allocate most of your money and work your way down to the category you want to spend less on. For example, if you MUST have a designer gown then write that down on your list as priority number one.

3) Keep your guest list simple: Invite only those closest to you and your fiancé(e). This factor is key to keeping your costs down. Reception food and beverage accounts for roughly 42%-50% of your total wedding budget. By inviting close family and/or friends you'll definitely save a huge bundle. A rule of thumb: if you haven't spoken to Aunt Kimberly or your high school BFF in more than two years then you shouldn't consider inviting them. I always suggest to my clients to create an "A" and "B" list. With each "will not be able to attend" RSVP response you can send out an invitation to someone from your "B" list. However, make sure you send these out well ahead of the RSVP deadline so the "B" list recipient won't feel like a last-minute invited guest. Trust me they'll know.

Not only will you need to feed your guests, but you need to feed your vendors too! One of my brides asked me, "why do I have to feed my vendors if I'm already paying a lot of money for their services?" Don't worry! You don't have to feed ALL vendors...only the ones who will be working on your wedding day for more than 6 hours and those who will be working during your reception. These vendors include your wedding planner and staff, photographer/videographer and their assistants, lighting technicians (if they are needed during the reception), and band members/DJs. This condition is usually stated on their contract. Ask the catering director if they provide vendor meals. Vendor meals (aka boxed lunch) are usually a little cheaper than the actual entree that will be served to your guests. Serving vendor meals are important especially if your reception site is in a remote area. If they have to go off-site for their meal the last thing you want is for them to arrive back late.

4) Get married during an off-peak season/day. It's obviously cheaper to marry during off-peak seasons usually between November-March. Some reception sites offer discounts and some don't. And remember just because you decide to marry on Christmas Eve, which is during an "off-peak month", doesn't mean that every vendor will offer their services for cheap. In addition, Saturdays, no matter what season, is the most sought after day to get married. Instead choose any other day like Friday or Sunday. Reception sites usually give a discount for booking your wedding on a less busy day. You can also opt for the less expensive luncheon or cocktail reception instead of a sit-down dinner reception.

5) DIY Projects. This economy has brought on this latest trend. Blogs and wedding planning portals like TheKnot.com have tons of ideas and inspirations. Etsy.com is a favorite among many brides, especially for those who want to save money on invitations.

Wedding Tip #2: The Importance of Event Lighting

As a wedding designer I always suggest to my clients to try to make room for lighting in their budget. It is one of the categories that is often overlooked. Lighting can dramatically change the mood and look of your event from monotonous to fabulous. With the help of lighting your centerpieces, interior space, cake and dance floor is immediately enhanced. Does your reception site contain bothersome decor like stained walls or peeling wallpaper? Lighting can help drop them in the shadows and focus on the strong points of your decor.

A friend of mine attended a wedding a few years ago in Los Angeles. Each table centerpiece was decorated beautifully with elaborate floral arrangements costing the couple more than $10,000. However, the room was too dark to appreciate the centerpieces. If you're spending money on flowers, cake, or table linens you'd want to enhance these strong points with lighting. Not only will your guests look great in a well lit room, but they will go home with a lasting impression of your wedding.

Although lighting can get a little pricey depending on what is needed, there are inexpensive ways to enhance your reception decor:

1) String twinkle lights on trees or with ceiling swags of chiffon.

2) Dress tables with candles to give a nice glow. Most reception sites have dimmer switches. If your reception site has them, make sure the lights are dimmed about a third. Candles alone will not give enough light in the room if you dim the lights all the way down.

3) A gobo pattern or monogram radiating on the wall or dance floor can add an elegant touch.

Wedding Tip #1: Invitation Etiquette regarding "No Children" in the reception

Lately I've been asked by some of my brides and other people about how to word an invitation to reflect their desire to not invite children to the reception. Many question if doing so will it come across as being rude. Absolutely not! I know there is no easy way to address this to your guests, but the best way to approach the situation is by doing the following:

1) Mentioning the "no children" clause via word-of-mouth. Ask those close to you to spread the word to invited guests.

2) Reception cards. Make sure your invitation designer includes the phrase "Adult Reception".

3) RSVP cards. Make sure you include "Number of Adults" next to the line where your guests will write the number of people attending.

As you know, I LOVE high-end fashion. I look to fashion, music, architecture, and art to draw inspiration to my event designs. Every once in a while I receive something in the mail from fashion houses like Burberry, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci. Last week I received the above picture in the mail from Gucci advertising their Spring/Summer 2009 sale. I was completely in awe by the eggplant purple/teal color combination that I had to share this with one of my brides who is having a teal wedding in May 2010. It’s the perfect mix for a spring wedding…bold, fresh, and sophisticated. I’m so excited to use this picture as my inspiration to design her wedding, which will have a modern-elegant feel. Stunning don’t you think? Fabulous!

J.Lo and Marc Anthony Renew their Vows - Vegas Style!

Traditionally, couples tend to renew their wedding vows when their marriage reaches a milestone like a Golden Wedding Anniversary or something. These days it isn't necessary to wait that long. Couples renew their wedding vows even after two years of marriage! I even know of one couple that renew their vows every year! Some couples renew their vows during an intimate ceremony, while others relive their wedding day all over again. A lot of times couples renew their wedding vows on another day other than the actual wedding date.

Today, People reported that Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony renewed their vows in Las Vegas early this morning (on my birthday!). The couple was in town celebrating Marc Anthony's birthday from last month. After a night of club-hopping they made a spur-of-the-moment choice to renew their wedding vows. It was witnessed by two friends, which took place at Caesars Palace's Forum Tower Penthouse. The singing duo wed a little over four years ago at a private residence on June 5, 2004. Congrats to the couple!

Inspiration: Architecture structure of Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and colors of a sunset

The fall season is here. The leaves are turning to the reddish-orange color of the sunset and the weather is slowly getting cooler. I recently spoke to a bride about wanting a brown, burnt orange (think Sunrise Calla Lilly), and cranberry red color scheme for her fall season wedding. However, she didn't want the typical "Thanksgiving-like" feel to it. Simple, romantic, elegant yet modern was the mood she wanted. I immediately pictured an "Autumn in New York". I was inspired by the modern architecture of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, which is the actual venue. I was also inspired by the season and the colors of a sunset. Someone's engaged to be married!!!

My friend and my daughter's Godmother, Pia, just got engaged while on a cruise with her longtime boyfriend, Ryan Lising! They've been dating for A LONG TIME! So congrats to the both of you! I knew she would get engaged! Ryan picked out a gorgeous radiant cut diamond with two smaller diamonds flanking the sides of the big rock! Good job Ryan (and yours truly...yeah me!) for picking out the perfect rock for a sweet girl! Here's the picture! Enjoy!
